August: Three Things We Are Loving
And what the heck they have to do with mindfulness
What We’re Watching: The Bear
The Bear, on Hulu, follows Carmen, a world-class chef who returns home to Chicago to run his family’s restaurant, The Original Beef of Chicagoland. The show takes inspiration from Chicago’s very own Mr. Beef, located in River North (just a couple blocks from CHILL) and offers glimpses of familiar city sights and experiences.
It takes us through the real challenges of business ownership and high-stress work environments. As the characters navigate the reinvention (and chaos) of running a family-owned restaurant, they face challenges head on, altering not only recipes, but their communication style as well. Collective awareness around obstacles and collaborative plans forward are the only ways the business can survive—anyone else taking a page from that cookbook?

What We’re Shopping: La DoubleJ
Opposites do attract!
La DoubleJ is a brand built on bold colors and eye-popping prints that boosts your mood and brings that summer feeling all year round. Using art as inspiration, La DoubleJ specializes in maximalism, while we at CHILL usually prefer a less-is-more approach. But it’s true—variety is the spice of life and being intentionally open to new things not only widens our perspectives, but is often just plain fun.
We love the Summer Tabletop selections especially Wildbird in Blue (what a delight!) and the Azzuro in Murano glass wine glasses. The vibrancy makes us feel like we’re in Italy, even when Lake Como is over 4,000 miles away.

What We’re Cooking: Aunt Susan’s Sea Bass
The best meals are the ones that taste great, are created with love, and don’t take long to make. This crowd pleaser can be prepared in just 30 minutes and will make you feel as accomplished in the kitchen as Chef Carmen. Dress your table with La DoubleJ’s colorful accessories, gather your favorite company, and enjoy.
Speaking of new experiences, why not try mindful eating? Enjoy the meditative process of making the meal, and then bring your awareness to the food in front of you and the experience of eating it—note the textures, flavors, and aromas. For now, The Bear and social media can wait—save them for after-meal entertainment.
