January 2023 - Mindfulness in the News Roundup

Inspired by recent studies and stories, we put together this roundup highlighting the many benefits of mindfulness and different ways you can incorporate it into your daily life.

This month, we discovered mindfulness can make us more optimistic, leading to greater health outcomes. Mindfulness also helps us better explore and experience the great outdoors. We also learned why awe is critical to our wellbeing.

Mindfulness + Optimism

The American Journal of Epidemiology expands on growing evidence showcasing the link between optimism and positive health outcomes. Another encouraging piece of research suggests optimism can easily be learned and adopted into your life. Researchers observed strong, statically significant associations between higher optimism levels and lower risk of mortality.

Consider how you can add a bit more optimism into your day. Here are a few ideas that only take a couple minutes:

  • Practice mindfulness

  • Write down three things you are grateful for

  • Make time for positive self-talk

  • Ponder what you can and cannot control

Mindfulness + Skiing

Condé Nast Traveler demonstrates how our favorite winter activity is mindful. On the ski slopes, pause and breathe in the cool air. Tune into the body and experience the lightness + freedom of the moment.

Whether or not you’re hitting the mountains this winter, you can incorporate mindfulness into any activity. Slow down, pay attention, and be intentional with your actions.

 Mindfulness + Awe

A recent The New York Times article highlights Psychologist Dacher Keltner and his book “Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life”. Dr. Keltner found that awe has a profound impact on the body. It regulates bodily functions. Slows the heart rate. Deepens the breath. It even helps with digestion. Furthermore, awe quiets the inner critic within each of us and decreases negative self-talk. He shares how we can introduce more awe into our lives including limiting distractions and focusing on the present moment through mindfulness.
